Unsung Copyeditors
The Book Standard has published a great Tribute to the Most Unheralded Job in Publishing, by Adam Langer:
That’s the way it goes with copyeditors. They perform one of the most important jobs on manuscripts, saving authors from their misspellings, their grammatical errors, their logical and stylistic flaws, and yet, their efforts remain largely anonymous.
I have been a copyeditor, among other things, for fourteen years. (By one style manual, that should be "14" in numerals, because [not "since" or "as"] it is a measurement followed by units, but I am working almost exclusively with Chicago 15 [not the album], not CBE, these days.) This article/interview is a nice little peek into a bit of what I do.
