My house is in turmoil. I ended up removing all three walls around the tub/shower, along with a good portion of the exterior wall in the bathroom because of the moisture. There was a lot of mold and mildew, but four days of leaving the lights on and running the fan full blast after wiping it down three times with full-strength bleach seems to have done the trick. The plumber comes tomorrow to install the new shower guts. With any luck I'll be able to stop commuting to shower by the end of the weekend.
Since the bathroom has been in a holding pattern while I await the plumber, I recommenced with the kitchen today: patching, sanding, and painting the walls and caulking around the new countertop. The walls need another coat of paint, then there's the trim to be done. I still have to finish painting the cabinet doors and do some tilework around the sink area, but at least I'll be able to clean the tools and junk off the table and have a functional kitchen once again.
The living room is overrun with refugee items from the kitchen and bathroom; it is indeed completely unusable right now. I am quite eager to finish these projects and get my house back to some semblance of normalcy soon.
