Big waves have been abundant so far this year, but I’ve yet to make it up to the North Shore to see them in person. Now that I have a "real" job and work M-F 7-4, I have to fight weekend big-wave traffic to get to a good vantage point.

My last big-wave viewing attempt was last winter, and I got stuck at a dead standstill on Kam Highway near Haleiwa for 20 minutes before I finally gave up and took some back roads to Haleiwa beach park. (I really love back roads maps.) The waves don’t get as high at Haleiwa proper as they do farther along at Waimea or Sunset, but they’re still pretty impressive.

Photos really don’t do big waves justice. You have to at least sit at the back edge of the beach and feel the ground rumble as the waves crash and feel the salty mist settle on your skin to get a sense of their power. And I suppose that pales against the experience of actually being out there in the water, surfing on those monsters.

Speaking of the power of nature, my friend Amy’s Devin is in yet another TV commercial. He’s the Hurricane, second from the left in this photo. The spot is scheduled to start airing in February. If you live in Hawaii, you’ve likely seen him in a few bank commercials and most recently as the dad who sits on Santa’s lap in a mobile phone commercial.

I got the digital camera back from repair this week. Of course they didn’t say what exactly was wrong with it, just that "major parts were replaced" and that it works fine now. Between sending it off and now I’ve forgotten all the stuff I read in the manual, so I’ll have to start all over again this weekend. My main goal for tonight is to figure out how to change the file size of the pictures it takes so I can fit more of them on the weenie compact flash card I have. Right now I’m just using them for the web, so resolution isn’t really an issue.
