If I had $250 or so to blow on something completely ridiculous, you better believe I’d get an action figure made of myself.

Speaking of money to blow, I attended the alumni club Christmas party last night. It was on the windward side in what can only be described as a castle. The no-nonsense guard at the gate took down my license plate number and type of car, and I had to give him my name and destination before he’d let me in. The exit side of the gate is equipped with those teeth that shred your tires if you back over them, and as far as I could tell in the fading light, the entire place was surrounded with a mighty high wall. (What a coincidence that I’ve been reading a book on gated communities.)

You could have quite easily fit five copies of my house into the living room of this place, two more of them into the "away" room, and another in the kitchen. Almost the entire first level had slate flooring, with pockets of extremely cushy carpeting. The sculpture and other artwork easily totalled a million dollars. There was a freestanding fireplace in one part of the living room that was probably 8 or 10 feet in diameter, and it wasn’t really big enough for you notice it unless you were really looking. The custom-made buffet cabinet probably cost more than a year’s salary for me.

To top it all off, it looked like Christmas exploded in there. You likely couldn’t find a high-end New York department store with more Christmas happening in one space, and certainly not one with a larger Army of Santas.

I think the universe is showing me all this over-the-top decadence this year for a reason -- which reason, I’m not sure. I’ve got it narrowed down to "Get off your ass and make something of yourself -- you have tons of creative ideas that blow these people out of the water" or "See how ridiculously people throw money around? You’d spend your fortune on way cooler and more meaningful stuff." Either way, I think it’s telling me that the fortune is out there for me, if I can find a way to it. Then I could spend it on way cooler and more meaningful stuff. Like a virtuallori action figure.
