It's official: I'm retro. One of the local radio stations dedicated the entire Labor Day weekend to 80s music, and I listened for much of Sunday and all of yesterday. My conclusion? You can toss out 90% of the music from the 90s, merge the remainder with the 80s, and I'd be perfectly happy.
I'm not much of a radio freak anymore, especially since every station seems to play their same set of 20 songs over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. (Maybe radio stations are crammed into such small quarters and/or have such low budgets that they can physically have only 20 CDs at a time.) That and the talkative DJ factor have killed radio for me. But that's a rant for another time...
It was cool to bask in the past for a weekend. Songs hold so many associations for me.
Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" -- Played by request for Unit J in the Stadium Dorm at OSU, heading out to class with my Walkman on, thinking "Hey! I know those guys!"
U2's "October" -- Walking across campus on a cold, gray, October day (when else?)
Jane's Addiction's "Been Caught Stealing" -- Riding in the Scirocco with Suz when the odometer turned over to 100K.
Sting's "Lazarus Heart" -- Cranking Chris's new stereo in the living room of the apartment on Waldeck.
Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole" -- Dancing at that club on Kenny Road in Columbus on the Sunday nights, the night they played good music.
Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun" -- Mustard's.
New Order's "Blue Monday" -- My first Christmas away from home.
Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl" -- Lonz's Winery (way before it collapsed)
Miami Sound Machine's "Conga" -- Vacationing in Florida with Mickey
anything by Debbie Gibson -- Julie, because of that odd guy she dated who was still a member of Debbie's fan club long after she was over.
AC/DC's "Shook Me All Night Long" -- Rollerskating in junior high
